Here's Why This 20-Year-Old Gauged Her Eyes Out

Twenty-year-old Kaylee Muthart of South Carolina made headlines in February when she gouged out both of her eyes while high on methamphetamine.

After paramedics took Muthart to a nearby hospital to treat her injuries, she was transferred to a psychiatric facility where doctors diagnosed her with bipolar disorder and prescribed her antipsychotic medication.

Self-enucleation is a rare form of self-inflicted injury usually associated with psychosis. There have been over 50 cases of complete or partial self-enucleation in English medical journals in the past 50 years, according to a 2012 study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
