Turns out you only need to work out for about 13 minutes to reap the benefits, according to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.
A team of researchers put 34 physically fit men on one of three fitness routines: the first group did one set of reps while the second did three sets and the third did five sets. Every group did executed the same exercises. The researches found those who performed just one set of each exercise benefited just as much as those who did five times as much work.
TL;DR: unless your fitness goal is to build muscle—in which case, more sets are better—three 13-minute lifting sessions per week will probably do the trick if you're setting out to get stronger.
