One year since Rio hosted a successful 2016 Olympic games, the city's Olympic legacy sits in ruins.
Rio de Janeiro declared bankruptcy just days after the Olympics' closing ceremony-- the result of a political scandal involving stolen public money. With no more money to pay suppliers to the Games, hospitals, schools, and emergency personnel bore the brunt of cuts to public services. Meanwhile, arenas used during the Olympic Games-- which cost an estimated $12 billion-- sit in disrepair.
